Management Team

An accomplished and committed core ownership and management team has been assembled at La Joya Perfecta with backgrounds in medicine and preventative health care, business management, real estate and development, and construction management. Importantly, this team is fully committed to La Joya Perfecta and has made personal investments of over seven figures. The management team is actively working with a number of exceptional contractors and service providers within Costa Rica and in the United States. The Management Team includes:

Bret G. Dudl, Founder, Developer; Registered Investment Fiduciary
Prior to founding La Joya Perfecta, Mr. Dudl was the Vice President of Retirement Plans for Intercare Insurance Solutions in San Diego. Mr. Dudl tripled the retirement plan assets in 18 months, which grew to over $350 million qualified in retirement plan assets covering more than 25,000 employees.

Before joining Intercare, Mr. Dudl owned and operated SFG Benefits Financial, a retirement benefits consulting firm.

In addition, Mr. Dudl was the managing director of retirement plans for Lincoln Financial Advisors in San Diego, a Fortune 100 company managing more than $150 billion in assets with approximately 22,000 retirement plans nationwide. At Lincoln, Mr. Dudl managed the San Diego office overseeing nearly $2 billion in assets.

For more than a decade, Mr. Dudl has provided an exceptional combination of expertise and experience in the retirement plans consulting arena. His specialty is building a business from scratch and growing it to a multi-million dollar operation. From getting the right people to developing the right product while managing costs and balancing the budget, Mr. Dudl has more than a decade of experience in startup success.

Mr. Dudl is a graduate of the University of Colorado and the Commercial Real Estate Academy.

James Callaghan, Principal; Sr. Development Manager & Principal, FPT Development Group

Jim Callaghan has a multi-national background in real estate acquisition, asset management, design and implementation of large scale development projects, and site environmental master planning. Additionally, he has been investing in commercial and residential real estate for over 20 years. Recently, he oversaw design, development and construction of a $175M San Diego Indian Gaming Casino, including construction of several casino floor expansions, a 4 megawatt co-generation system with redundant generator back-up and an 18-hole golf course.

Prior to joining the FPT group, Mr. Callaghan was with Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) Incorporated for 14 years as the Vice President of International and Domestic Real Estate Development, Construction and Facilities. He was instrumental in managing and leading a team of over 500 individuals focusing on delivering $2B worth of domestic and international development projects in the U.S., China, India and Russia. During his tenure at Qualcomm he also participated on several City of San Diego and State of California regulatory boards associated with regional transportation and energy needs which affected the region and local community. Mr. Callaghan earned his BS Degree in Civil engineering from University of Long Beach and his M.B.A. from Pepperdine University.

Jim Dudl, MD; Chief Medical Advisor

Dr. Jim Dudl is the head of Diabetes for Kaiser Permanente managing the preventative medicine and wellness programs for over 600,000 patients across the United States. His experience with running the clinics in 15 hospitals across 7 states makes him ideally suited to advise the wellness centers at La Joya Perfecta. He is an internationally recognized speaker to physicians and patients, including on the topics of eldercare wellness and longevity programs.

Dr. Dudl is an advisor to the US Government on preventative medicine for its 2009 $500 billion budget. He has written over 40 publications mostly in the area of clinical diabetes, and is actively doing research regarding glucose control and the prevention of cardiovascular disease. He is presently active as a consultant to the Costa Rica Community National Diabetes Task Force and the Disease Prevention & Wellness Initiatives in Cortes, Costa Rica.

Dr. Dudl is a Phi Beta Kappa honor graduate of the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Medical School.

Steve Klein, O.D., Founder’s Club Principal; Clinical Director, Tierrasanta Vision Center & Total Vision Care

Steven T. Klein, OD is a successful entrepreneur founding and growing two successful eye clinics in San Diego. He has been the Clinical Director of two private practice optometry clinics in the San Diego area since 1990. He was a preceptor for the Pennsylvania College of Optometry Externship Program from 2005-2008. Dr. Klein has also been involved in clinical studies with Ophthonix, Vistakon, Ciba, Synergeyes, Bausch & Lomb and Coopervision. He is a nationally recognized speaker and educator on various topics for Allergan Pharmaceuticals and Coopervision.

Dr. Klein is the secretary-treasurer on the State Board of the California Vision Foundation and past president of the Lions Optometric Vision Clinic, a community clinic providing eye care for the underserved. For six years he served on the Board of Directors of the San Diego County Optometric Society.

Dr. Klein received his Bachelor of Science degree from UCLA and his Doctor of Optometry degree from Southern California College of Optometry. Furthermore, he is a member of American Optometric Association, California Optometric Association, San Diego County Optometric Society, and the Rancho Bernardo Chamber of Commerce. He resides in Rancho Santa Fe and is President of the Rancho Santa Fe Community Center 2009 Board of Directors.

Detlef Sarbok, VP of Finance

Detlef Sarbok joined La Joya Perfecta, after successfully completing Punta Dominical with Hal Wright, where he was CFO and responsible for all aspects of Finance and Technology. Punta Dominical is a 2,000 acre sustainable development project which includes condos, villas, multi-million dollar homes and home lots, and a boutique hotel on the southern pacific coast of Costa Rica. At Ourlife Mr. Sarbok is responsible for finance and information technology systems, networks, and the development of the proprietary software SAVE Rx. He is a graduate of the University of Colorado, Leeds School of Business, and has a Masters from Cornell University.
